Dance Proms Young Choreographer 2017

Christopher Thomas 20, from Dover, has been named as Dance Proms Young Choreographer 2017. He will go on to receive a one-to-one mentoring workshop with Akram Khan, and will have his choreography performed at Dance Proms.

A precocious talent, Christopher has been performing in West End productions from a young age. Since training at The Royal Ballet School and Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance, he has been collecting accolades for his work with a variety of dance companies.

This year’s judging panel for the Young Choreographer Award included Michael Nunn, John Partridge, Nafisah Baba, and Darcey Bussell. They were asked to consider originality, creativity, use of space, floor patterning, movement, use of costume, and choice of music when making a decision on the winner.

The judges were unanimous in their praise of Christopher’s piece, ‘In Light of Those You Love’, with Michael Nunn describing it as, “A wonderfully accomplished piece that would sit well in a professional performance setting. Well danced and well-rehearsed. Bravo!”

A message from Darcey Bussell to all the Young Choreographers who entered this year.
